I would like to buy an "universal" player.
The budget is ~5,000 USD but I could squeeze another 1.000 if necessary.
I narrowed my choices to the following models:
1. Theta Digital Compli
2. Esoteric DV50
I like the performance of Theta Digital's products (currently owning a David) but I am less happy with the reliability of their transports and their excessive sensitivity to even minor flaws (scratches, finger marks) of the disc surface.
OTOH, the Esoteric seems to use a very reliable transport and, according to reviewers, is built like a tank... but I never listened to it.
Any advice ? Are there other brands/models I should consider ?
Before stating the obvious "go listen for yourself", please consider that, in my corner of the world, I can only test the Compli since the distributor of Teac does not stock the more expensive Esoteric line (available on order only).
Also, this is the main reason I ruled out products from Simaudio (no local distribution). Yes I know I could (maybe) mail-order but I am not confortable with the scenario of overseas service.
