Greetings,
I'm looking for some guidance on purchasing new/used vinyl. I have a few questions, so I'll ask them separately.
1. I want to purchase Michael Jackson's Thriller album, but I am unsure whether to purchase new or used. I don't mind purchasing used, but I don't know if I am better off buying new. I don't know if there are certain "pressings" I should avoid or if any of them are fine. I also see where there is a 25th anniversary edition that is offered and a 180 gram option that is available. Some other albums on my list are Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, Neil Young's Greatest Hits, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Should the new or used purchase be a personal preference or is there a logical explanation behind it? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
2. How important is record cleaning? I read where some people clean by hand, while others use a machine( machine meaning a record washer and/or vacuum). I also read where people use a combination of cleaning by hand and by machine. I've spoke with some used record store employees who say they clean their records with chemicals such as rubbing alcohol and/or Windex. I see where there are a few companies that offer many different types of cleaning solutions for records, but I can't really make heads or tales of them. I read a very comprehensive article on analog planet, but it seemed to be a little too much work just to clean a record. But maybe that is the right way to clean records and I need to take this seriously. Any pointers on supplies and cleaning procedures are welcomed.
3. How important is a felt mat? Is the mat that came with my Rega RP1 sufficient?
