Several years ago, under different ownership, the magazine was moved from our 110 Fifth Avenue office in Union Square to our current 261 Madison Avenue location in Murray Hill. They put us on the 9th floor. It was nice. I made some friends. A couple of years later, we were moved from the 9th floor to the 6th floor. And a couple of years after that, we were moved again, from the 6th floor to our current location on the 5th floor.
Have I ever mentioned that we share this floor with the lovely ladies of
Soap Opera Digest and
Soap Opera Weekly?
That’s right. We do. It’s especially fun in the summertime. You can imagine. Also, when walking down our halls, you see a funny thing: Large-scale
Stereophile covers sharing wall space with large-scale
Soaps covers. Oh, here’s 1000 watts of power from Boulder, and here’s the old Sonic Frontiers Transport, and here’s Luke and Laura, and here’s Susan Lucci. I’ve made some friends. It’s been nice.
In a couple of weeks, however, we’ll be moving back up to the 6th floor. The entire company, in fact—
Soaps,
Power & Motoryacht, the Action Sports Group, the Home Tech Group (that’s us, along with
Home Theater), the Automotive Group, and all of the corporate dudes, all of the IT dudes, all of the marketing people, everyone—will be squeezed onto the 6th floor. It should be fun. So, in preparation, we’ve been asked to take inventory and throw away whatever we can.
While on my way to
Stereophile’s storage room, where we keep empty boxes, some backissues, Stereophile recordings, and review samples, I noticed a Boltz CD rack standing beside a dumpster, waiting to be taken down the freight elevator and tossed in the trash. Someone was throwing it away. Can you believe that?
Well, now it’s mine. It’s not really my style, but neither are compact discs and I’ve got a bunch of them, too.
