So, I'm sure newbie questions come up all the time about how to put together a system, but I haven't found one that addresses my particular needs and I'm sure it's the kind of question people enjoy answering. So, here's my twist on this question.

I would like to build a good system at the low end of what is still considered audiophile level. I don't mind spending a lot of money on it, but I am not willing to buy it all at once. Instead, I would like to build the system over time. The first challenge in doing this is figuring out what the minimal components I should get to start with are. They need to be components that I can add to over time in order to improve upon my system, but that are acceptable for now until I'm ready to buy the next piece of equipment.

My most pressing need right now is a system to connect my blueray player, hdtv cable box, and gaming system to. So, it needs to be some kind of rig that will accept hdmi input, send the video signal to the tv, and everything else to the audio components. I don't care for surround speakers for now, but I wouldn't mind having the ability to add more speakers later.

In the future I'd also like to add a turntable to the system, run my computer audio through it, and perhaps add a standalone cd player. A lot of the articles on this site and posts on this forum cover the specifics of those components well, so I don't need guidance on those components. But I am pointing that out in order to give you an idea of where I'm planning on going with it.

Any help/recommendations would be great. I really don't mind spending a lot of money on this over time, but wouldn't want to spend more than a few grand per year on it. I have other expensive hobbies to feed as well.
