While on a two week vacation from performing with the Count Basie band Joe Newman decided to get together some friends for a great session that is full of energy and bops. The talented team: Jow Newman-trumpet, Frank Wess-Tenor sax, Tommy Flanagan-Piano, Eddite Jones-Bass, Oliver Jackson-Drums comes together very nicely in the 6 songs on this disc. Rudy Van Gelder was the recording engineer and it really shows. The stereo seperation is a near perfect as one can get especially whenb Joe and Frank decide to have a bit of a blowing contest on Jive at Five. Although the CD is short, only 37:00 minutes I find myself listening to this CD again and again. Highly recommended very hard to find.
