If I am playing music from my computer to my speakers, does it yield the best sound* if i turn up the volume all the way on the "source component", in this case, Windows Media Player 12, the "preamp", in this case my ASUS Notebook UL80VT Series laptop volume controls, or the "amp"/"speaker", in this case my Tivoli Model Two speakers (they are powered, hence the amp/speaker metaphor)?

For instance, I could keep the WMP volume up all the way, and my laptop volume up all the way, and then only make volume adjustments with the Tivoli. Or I could keep the WMP volume at full, put the Tivoli knob at half, and adjust volume using the laptop, which is what I do now. Or I could put the WMP volume at 1/4, put the laptop at 1/2, and then turn up the Tivoli as necessary. Etc.

* the most accurate sound reproduction: the least distortion, the least noise, best frequency range and dynamic range, best tonal clarity.

Thanks,

Ethan
