Tonight I came home to discover that a small bookshelf that my wife had put up behind the computer had collapsed from the weight of the approximately 600 CDs that were on top of it. So far, looks like the CDs are ok.

I call my long-suffering wife at work and tell her the news. Remind her that tomorrow I'm going to briefly be in NYC. Talk her into letting me buy a big-ass RAID 1 drive so I can banish the CDs into the basement....

I'm going to do the el-cheapo music server thing. Stick an old dual-G4 mac running BSD or Linux into a closet with aforementioned big-ass RAID 1 drive hooked up to it, and just connect via the house network.

I feel strangely liberated. Now if I can just teach the 5 year old to rip CDs losslessly...
