So I picked up a mint Dusty Springfield's Best from waaaay back in the day, thinking it be a nice addition to my growing library of 60's classics records. I've scored a bunch of great early Stones, Beatles, CSN, and a lot of other gems from the local used record store, but this alas was not one.
Physically it was in good shape, but sonically it was pretty shrill and thin. But the main problem I had was the content. I mean, you stick a lot of her songs in a good movie over top some moody or hip scene and somehow you attribute all kinds of positive characteristics to her that don't hold up in isolation. By the second side I started thinking: "Why she the Brittany Spears of her day?" The writing is terrible, (most of it by "hit makers" of the day like Burt Bacharach), the delivery WAY overdone in most cases, the production slick and souless. Hmmm. Bummer. Well- not that big a deal. The record only cost me $4.99. Mostly just disappointing.
