A friend of mine is looking for a preamp, so I went to a dealer with him today. He heard some stuff that ultimately left him more confused than when he first started. Alas, that's not the point of my story.
As we were about to leave, I told the dealer that I'm seriously considering buying the Magnepans 3.6R and that I haven't heard anything that would even remotely touch them at this price, but they're not perfect, so perhaps he could recommend something in this price range that would cover the bass better. (This dealer doesn't carry the Magnepans).
Dealer: How much are the Magnepans?
Me: About $4400
Dealer: Hmmm... You know, for $25k, you can really get a set of speakers that would do what you're looking for...
Me: Yes, I know, but we're talking about under $5k range. I heard the Gallos...
Dealer: They're horrible, aren't they?
Me: I thought they were good for the price...
Dealer: I don't even consider them speakers...
Me: I don't think they're bad at all considering what they cost. Their only competition for the money are the Paradigms...
Dealer: Paradigms?? Don't even talk to me
Me: What would you recommend?
Dealer: Me?
Me: Yeah, if you were buying and had a $3k budget what would you recommend?
Dealer: I would say, increase your budget and get the JM Labs Electra 1027 for 9k.
Me: Err... yeah.
I wonder if there are specially designed cabbage patches that produce custom assholes that morph into hi-fi and used car dealers? What is it about hi-fi that attracts this sort of personality and makes it flourish?
