I have been using a Dell 600m laptop running Windows XP and iTunes with error correction engaged to rip cds via a Plextor PX-712 UF external USB disc drive. Everything was working flawlessly until I upgraded from iTunes v.4.9 to v.5. Thereafter, iTunes would recognize a cd but would not play it or import it.

I confirmed that the problem was not with the Plextor external drive since all was well using a version of Windows Media player to rip a cd and other software to rip and burn DVDs. I have all of the updates to Windows XP and the latest firmware for the Plextor drive. I could also use the drive to burn a cdr with iTunes. I uninstalled and reinstalled v.5.0 several times. Nothing worked.

After extensively searching Apple's support website, the only solution that I could find was to turn off error correction. After I did so I could again import cds with the external drive. I think it would be a mistake to give up now as it is my understanding that error correction is essential for optimizing the sound quality of the imported music.

Does anyone know how I can again engage error correction and import cds with iTunes through the Plextor external drive? If not, can anyone offer a solution for ripping cds to the computer and then importing the files into iTunes in Apple lossless format with tags attached?

Thanks for any assistance the group can offer.
