Chris Sommovigo, owner of Signals-Superfi, the high end distributor/Importer of the Continuum turntable invited me to an Open House he was staging for the Atlanta Audio Society this Sunday afternoon from 2-5pm. It was most gracious of him to invite me and I was all to eager to accept.
Two listening rooms were set up. One was with a Manley SteelHead driving either Boulder monoblocks or a 10watt/ch David Berning tube amp.
This room was set up to audition either the Peak Consult Princess F/S 2-way floorstanders and the German Physics super spacious floorstanders. Unfortunately Chris had not had time to set up the Caliburn. It had just come back from a demo, and I can imagine that it is not a 15 minute procedure, but maybe next time. Hearing Mikey's turntable would have been a blast.
I was most impressed with the Peak Consult Princess floorstanders. Super musicality is the best way to describe the sound. To hear this speaker is only a part of it as the cabinetry is to die for. I cannot imagine anyone not finding these speakers beautiful to behold and a true addition to any home setting.
The other room had a pair of Stereolab Angelus speakers whose cabinety is also exquisite. They are a true point source, front ported, 2-way floostander. The tweeter is fixed position mounted where the normal woofer dust cap would be, and without measurements, certainly sounded phase coherent to me. I was most impressed as I am a real lover of great execusion of 2-way designs.
This system was driven by an I-Mac running USB into a Bel Canto integrated with built-in DAC with USB receiver. Tunes were played in full format from ITunes and sounded very good.
I was most impressed with the Peak Consult Princess F/S and the Sterolab Angelus speakers. Chris has put together a great line of products that perform on the same level as they look...stunning. They all certainly deserve an audition for anyone looking to upgrade.
I would have loved to have heard the El Diablos that Mickey recently reviewed. I hope that can be done the next time with the Caliburn/Continuum set up. That would be special.
A big shout-out to Chris for the invite and a great time listening to great music on some special audio products. Life can be very good.
