I've had the good fortune of seeing many concerts over the past 35 some years. Many of them quite memorable: Tom Petty at the Filmore (SF); Los Lobos (everywhere); Peter Case, Freedy Johnston, & Alejander Escquevedo at Slims in SF; Suzanne Vega's first tour in Washington DC; Jethro Tull at the LA Coliseum (the concert reportedly where live opium poppies were found to be growing afterwards); John Prine with Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt at the Luther Burbank center in No Cal; Little Feat at the Palamino Club in West Hollywood; X at the Whiskey a Go Go; original Pretenders at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernadino; the Masters of Steel String Guitars at the Wadsworth VA hall in West LA; Marshall Crenshaw at HOB Los Angeles; Cash Brothers at HOB Las Vegas; Brian Ferry at HOB Las Vegas; Rolling Stones at several venues... (thanks Buddha!!)...and many more.
This weekend, I flew 1500 miles 'round trip to see Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely, and Guy Clark's Songwriter's Tour at the Paramount Theater in Denver CO. This show was magical! I initially was unsure 'cause our seats were well under the balcony. The crowd was respectful and the sound was first rate. They performed with passion and enthusiam, and just the right amount of banter between them. I told my wife after Lyle's first song that this was a religious experience. It was just the 4 artisans and their guitars...no ups no extras. Log on to one of their websites and see if they are coming to your town. The concert will restore your faith in live music and the singer-songwriter. They've been doing this tour off and on for a few years now. I bet even Dup would enjoy this show!
