I am running a music hall 5.1 TT, music hall 15.2 amp through energy veritas speakers. I really need to upgrade the speakers as these bookshelves are sorely lacking in the bass department and have a plan to get the KEF Q900 which I should be able to drive with the music hall amp. But that's not my question...

I want to upgrade the preamp as I have read that this is really the heart of the system. I know the music hall preamp is pretty good based on reviews but how good? Of course the easy answer would be to audition various preamps and see but that is not very available where I live unless I go the internet route.

How much do you think I would have to spend to get a preamp that is unquestionably better than the preamp in the music hall 15.2? If I could spend $500 and make a huge difference I would be much more willing to do that versus is I needed to spend over $1000.
