First post here and looking for advice. First, what I wish to end up with is a way to digitally play about 1000 CD's in their original form. Second, I'm very new to all this and don't know much of the terminology. Third, I'd like to keep my upgrade budget under $3000 if possible.

My present setup is a 160GB iPod playing mp3's through a very old Yamaha receiver with equally antiquated Bose speakers. Over the years I've really grown my music collection but other than the time and money I spent ripping everything to mp3 and setting up the iPod, I never upgraded my overall system.

Now I would like some sort of server to store the music, a receiver to play the music, and a pair of new speakers to listen to the music. Also wish to keep this new system completely independent of my home-computer system -- other than the initial setup or configuration.

So I'm open to ideas and would be most interested in what systems are working out there. Would the Wadia 170i be a good way to go and just keep all my music in mp3 format or is worth re-ripping all CD's into pure digital ?
