Stereophile Community,
I am now several weeks into researching the purchase of my first real sound system so I thought it would be appropriate to post on this section of the forums. I am on a relatively tight budget judging from what I have seen suggested on other threads on this site. My current budget is capped at around 600$ (I am a current college student and this is already pretty pricy for me).
I would like the system to primarily be used for music listening. I like listening to jazz, classical, rock, techno, and rap. I'd also like the system to be able to pack some bass punch and handle high volumes for party atmosphere.
So far my search along this criteria have led me towards floor standing speakers as some include quite a bit of bass built in and appear to save me the money I would need to spend on a sub. I have also found surround sound to not provide the best music listening experience. Here is a tower I have found with good customer reviews and quite a bit of bass built in:

At the price I'm assuming these towers sacrifice some sound quality to achieve the large sound they appear to produce. Does anyone have experience with this brand/style of speaker? If these speakers are a good value and do pack the punch I am looking for, what is a good receiver to pair with them? My search turned this up in my price range, although I am not sure how to find an optimally compatible one:

Friends of mine who have participated in the search up to this point have also suggested looking at monitor and commercial speakers. I have seen both available online but don't quite understand the differences between them and regular "speakers".
Thank you for any help you can provide with my search. I apologize for making such a large post and with so many questions!
