Ok,
First off, this is my first post. Second, "Hi".
I bought a pair of Magnepan MMG's about two years ago. I used to work at Stereo Exchange in NYC, so I had some gear that I hooked up. Here's what happened:
Marantz MA-22 monoblocs - Great little amps - very transparent but way underpowered
McCormack Micro Line and Power Drive (the older oblong shape) - beautiful but still underpowered
Added another Micro Power Drive and bridged the amps to mono - actually spoke with Steve McCormack via telephone to see if this was a good idea - sounded as close to incredible as MMG's will go
Ok, bridging to mono was probably not a good idea. One amp is now screaming in pain, the other amp (after being switched back to stereo) is humming at a constant volume like there is a ground problem and now the Line Drive Preamp is working well on input one only. Inputs 2 and 3 are only audible via right channel.
What the heck happened?
Now, I'm thinking of having the mccormack gear repaired (but at what cost?). It'll run in the hundreds.
I was thinking of buying some older rotel amps configured to mono and some sort of preamp that would match well but I am really at a loss.
Should I go with the repairs for an extra few hundred or sell the McCormacks "as is" and get new gear? I know people are looking for those older series Micro components but I liked them very much.
Any advice for a quick/not so costly fix???
Whew, you all understand how it goes.
