Here are my top 5 sax lovers albums. I am not going to include Coltrane because frankly I love all his work...and I won't include any "smooth jazz". I am also only including CD's that are up to par on both performance and sonics.
1. The complete Roost Sonny Stitt Recordings- 9CD's Mosaic Records. I believe that Sonny Stitt was a better sax player than a lot of people out there. While not into exploration as Coltrane was Mr Stitt plays with a fire that is hard swing. His blues are excellent and his boxed CD set is a great way to get into one of the best sax players ever.
2. Gene Ammons- Boss Tenor (XRCD), Blue Gene (OJC), We'll be together again Ammons & Stitt, All-Star Sessions, : Another underrated sax player who recorded jamming sessions and all star sessions. What a great collection of music that is NOT to be missed by anyone...
3. Ben Webster Encounter Coleman Hawlins, SoulVille, Ben Webster and Associates: Ben Webster is overlooked from an "artistic" stanpoint but his music is classic jazz that has a big band swing style.
4. The Genius of Coleman Hawkins, Hawkins On Broadway (XRCD), The Hawk Flies High, Very Saxy
5. Take Five Dave Brubeck: Yeah I know Brubeck was a piano player but Desmond steals the show on this CD that is a must for ANY jazz fan.
6. Johhny Griffin: Little Giant (XRCD), A Blwing Session, Pieces
There are a hell of a lot more and invite others to add to this list. I didn't include any "free form" sax players as well. Sonny Rollins is another one of my favorites but frankly I like Webster, Stitt and Ammons ahead of him.
