2-channel is dead? Well, for some maybe, but for others it still is alive and kicking. That includes me.
So my ever kind wife, Diane, desides to stage a tag/garage sale to help the youth at church raise money for summer camp. A noble undertaking.
A developer/realtor cloose friend of ours donates a partially used strip-mall parking lot for the event. Diane sells 30 spaces for $10 each and with the youth selling hotdogs, hamburgers, and soda they did pretty well for almost no work. The place is packed all day.
The only active store is a pawn shop owned by the brother of the realtor. I usually do not frequent pawn shops, but killing time I go in look around at what is mostly, to me, junk. I see some audio gear and really don't look that hard, but then I spot the name Yamaha on a piece and move in closer.
What do I find is a decent condition Yamaha CX-2 preamp with phono stage with a matching Yamaha M-80 250 watt/ch power amp. It is in decent cosmetic condition...7 out of 10.
Of course I ask if they work which Bob says yes as they were his brother's who went HT. He says his brother was hoping to get $100 for both!!!!!!! I could not get the check-book out of my pocket fast enough.
As I write this, after clean-up, those two pieces are giving me some very good to excellent SACD playback of Michel Camilo's "Solo" disc. The amp is pushing my old AR 58 twelves lower than I've hear in a while.
The Yamaha CX-2's phono stage is a big step up in smoothness and warmth from my old Hafler DH 101. I am still having a hard time believing I am listening to $100 worth of audio only because 2-channel is dead!!!!!!!
God of all things audio was shining on me today. I hope you are next.
