Before I buy a tube amp, I want to try adding a phono preamp to my current setup to see if I can improve the sound with what I have. I have an Onkyo solid-state integrated amp with a built-in phono stage. Some of the tube amps I'm considering for eventual purchase also have a built-in phono stage.
Forgive me for asking such a basic question. When you add a separate phono-stage to your system, is it necessary or preferred to bypass the built-in integrated amp phono stage and connect to a line-level auxiliary input? If you connect a phono preamp to your amp's built-in phono stage, does that cause problems?
I'm looking down the road to an integrated tube amp in the entry-level category, something like a Rogue Audio Cronus, or a PrimaLuna Prologue 2, or something in that price range. So if such a thing exists, I'd like to buy a phono preamp that would be compatible with my current SS integrated as well as a future entry-level tube amp.
