I've had a Yamaha RXV1000 Receiver for the last 9 years that has always pleased me sonically, but is now well behind the latest technology (connections, switching and codecs).

I've got a bit more budget this time around, and a bit more space. I'm looking to take my system up a notch: sonically, and feature set wise. I'd also like to be a bit more "future proof" although, I don't think that's really possible anymore. I listen to a fair amount of multi-channel music on SACD and DVD Audio, in addition to movies, though I'm predominately playing stereo music. I'm also looking to do a bit of music distribution around the house.

So, my question is:
With the advances today, does it still make sense to go with separates (I think so), and assuming yes, is it best to get a preamp/processor + an amp, or some sort of processor and an integrated amplifier? What do you see as the benefits of one over the other. It's new territory for me.

This is a general typology question - I'm not looking for brand/model recommendations just yet.

Thanks!
dan
