Hello, it's been a while since I have posted, so I think I should recap my situation. I have a Thorens TD166 MkII (with a signet 7lga cartridge, i think it might be a pos, can't find any info online) record player that I am playing through my computer with a Rolls VP29 Phono-pre. I do not own anything else for a system. I think I have finally decided on speakers though, the Vandersteen 2C's. I have heard so many glowing reviews of the speakers, and as I live in the Bay Area, I often see them for sale on craigslist. I am pretty confident that this summer I will be able to find and purchase some in the $300-600 range (I am currently in college and don't have room for them in my dorm room). At first I was thinking of going with klipsh or paradigm, but the vandersteens seem to be the best for the money. They are also better reviewed and more available for purchase.
The dilemma I have now is in purchasing a receiver/amp. I am completely clueless here. I have been searching around the forums and google doing research, but I feel like I haven't found much. Everyone says auditioning is key, but I would like to get some primary ideas to know what I should be looking for. I would like to buy used.
The system I want to buy will be mainly for listening to music from my TT and pc. However, I will also be using it for watching movies. Maybe one day I will upgrade to 5.1? Should I be getting a sub? I am not really sure about my price range. Certainly less than $1000, but over the summer I will hopefully get a job and will be able to spend more than $200.
Any help/recommendations/pointing in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
