I posted the below in the analog forum, but since it's an entry-level question and this page gets a lot more traffic, I thought I would throw it up here too.
I'm 100% new to vinyl, just got my first turntable ever up and running yesterday, a Rega RP1, and I'm loving it so far. Since I'm new to vinyl, though, I don't know if some of the things I'm noticing are legitimate concerns or just some of the idiosyncrasies of record-playing.
The most noticeable thing is that the platter doesn't spin totally level, there's a slight wobble to it. With quiet music I can hear a slight scratching through the speakers when the "up" wobble comes around but it doesn't detract too heavily. Is a little wobble pretty normal or would that be considered a defect that I should take to the dealer?
Also, I'm using the factory installed Ortofon OM5 and it looks like maybe the back end of the cartridge is dragging along the record sometimes? I found this picture, which might help me better explain: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28174267@N03/2725159566/in/photostream/. The spot in question is directly below the bottom of the last "O" on Ortofon. Once again, something I need to be worried about? Anything I can do about it?
This one isn't a problem necessarily, but I was surprised to see that the RP1 has built-in interconnects. Is that pretty common for turntables at this level? I got a couple Audioquest interconnects that I was excited to try only to find out that they're useless here.
All in all, I'm totally happy with my dive into vinyl, just need to figure out these few issues. Any other pointers for a beginner would be much appreciated, too. Thanks all.
