Robin Wyatt is also a purveyor of unusual and exceptional sound systems. His showing at CAF was—um—no exception.
The highlight here was the Simco ONE loudspeakers ($15,950/pair) in their US debut, Rounding out the system was an Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition streamer/DAC ($1295), a VPI "In The Can" DD turntable ($15,500) equipped with a second tonearm, a Bokrand DZT SAK ($5895). Cartridges were a Miyajima Destiny stereo ($7750) and an Infinity Mono ($3550). Amplification was all Miyajima, an MC-2 tube head amp ($7950), a Wo-1 preamp ($21,750), and a pair of Model 2020 OTL amplifiers ($31,500/pair).
Cables were by Finley Audio; a Metal Mat's Gun Metal Platter Mat ($1650), Wax Rax LP Console ($1795), and Omne Hendeka headphones ($725) completed the setup.
I expect full engagement with Wyatt's systems, and this one delivered. Playing with deliberate, overwhelming speed, the system also delivered serious chunk and texture on AR Rahman's orchestral soundtrack work and sweet tone from a Harry Belafonte LP. It lit up and filled the room with sound.
About those debut speakers: The Simco ONE uses a 1.4" Italian RCF Pro horn compression driver and a 12" French Faital Pro woofer. The cabinet is constructed of 18mm Norwegian pine. The baffle is made of high-grade, powder-coated aluminum. The Simco ONE stands 23" (H) x 23" (W) x 15 3⁄4" (D) and weighs 45kg.The specified low end reach is 38Hz. Sensitivity is 95dB/2.83V/1m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms make this speaker a very easy load for an amplifier.
