Hi

Im struggling to understand music servers.

We have been told for years that we need a high end CD transport to get great sound. The current crop of music servers including expensive names like Mcintosh are being very highly rated.

Could someone please explain what the difference is between a music server playing via a good DAC and a cheap CD player playing via the same DAC ? if the music prior to the DAC is purely a digital stream that can be sourced from a hard drive or RAM device what difference does it make how that digital data is sourced ? as long as that data is at the correct sampling rate with no errors how can the CD transport have any possible effect on the sound ?

Once we assume an accurate digital bitstream the quality of the music is entirely down to the DAC ?

Im not trying to be argumentative but from a technical viewpoint its hard to say anything else.

What are other people thought's?

Alan
