Hello, folks! I just joined here and am looking for your insights on a choice of speakers.
I have the option of buying a pair of these used speakers. They will be run by a Onkyo TX-NR818 for now. I might add an Emotiva amp for the front 2 channels. Hopefully, if I'm a good boy and she is impressed, she will allow me to buy a decent amp. My family room where I listen to music is also shared by the family for watching movies or TV; hence, whichever of these two speakers I choose will have a dual purpose: my music and their HT. The room is rather tricky. It's 20' long and 15' wide. However, on the long side, half of it 8' high and the other half is about 15' high (kind of a cathedral ceiling). I'll be placing the speakers on the long side, with one of the speakers in the higher volume zone and the other under the lower ceiling. [The architect had to accommodate a bathroom/jacuzzi upstairs and hence this weird-shaped room downstairs. Looks ok but I don't think it's acousticaly elegant or efficient].
Anyway, coming back to the speakers, what I learned is that -- fundamentally -- the Sonus Faber Liutos present a better base and the JML Focal Electra 936 have a clearer upper range. I haven't see these in the local AV stores so that I could request the dealers for a listen (I could buy some accessories for their trouble). If I don't like the speakers, I can pass them on to my son down the road (if he does well in college) and buy somethign else. My musical taste is very eclectic and includes rock, blues, jazz, world music, and a little classical (western and Indian). I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences you can share. My budget is less then $3,000. I'm open to any other recommendations. As you can see, I'm a novice and just starting off. Sorry about the long and rambling note and if I posted this in the wrong forum, my apologies.
