Thanks to Kal and jackfish my sub woofer is now more sub and less sow.  I've probably broken several audiophile laws by attempting a sub-woofer on the cheap, but it's behaving better with the suggested filter now installed between the preamp and amp driving the sub.

My listening room is fairly good sized, 14' x 25' x 9.5', and the bottom end needed some oomph when rocking out or enjoying full orchestral bombast.  I installed new 15" woofers in an old Kasino (Custom) bass guitar speaker bottom.  The cabinet faced into one corner of the room and the cavity was stuffed with heavy shipping blankets, in an attempt to create a mechanical filter for the mids and highs.  It was only somewhat successful as too much low mid and high bass leaked out.

As you may imagine the results were mostly annoying, except for full volume rocking.  Am I correct to assume that turning the speaker around to face the room, sans blankets, may produce better transient impact?  Might I have to change the electrical phasing?  Thanks for any suggestions.
