Aloha,

Any of y'all ever met up with a kindred spirit by virtue of the hard copy of Sterophile?

I've had two issues gift me with long term buddy-ship.

July 1992 issue: I was working at UCLA and had a friend in the same field but in another division, and on July first each year, a new 'fellow' would rotate in for one that left. My friend Mike was a holdover, and I went down to hang with him and next to his desk was the desk of the 'new guy.'

On top of the desk was the July, 1992 Sterophile. Slightly obscured below it was a 1985 issue with an Adcom power amp review that it was open to.

The new guy's name was Mike, so he became Big Mike, and we've been buddies ever since.

Then, three years ago, my son, Jake, was invited to a third grade birthday party at an ice skating rink. I took him, and brought my copy of Stereophile - I was usually the only daddy at these early grade birthday things.

As I was sitting in the bleacher with my issue, a guy came up to me and asked, "Are you an audiophile?"

I said, "Sometimes," and my new friend Craig, who is Allison's dad, whose birthday it was, came to exist. Craig is a computer super genius who I can't believe can talk down to my level. He restrung my wife's guitar, too - and, no, that's not a euphemism!

Tonight, all three of us and our families are having dinner - so, in a way, Stereophile hooked up our families, too.

(Allison and Jake danced at the 6th grade school dance last night. Very chaste, they are only 6th graders, but I'm pleased. She's as smart as her daddy.)

Anyway, has the mag ever broken the ice for you?
