My first post. I subscribed after being away from the magazines for a few decades (I used to read Stereo Review religiously) because I wanted to see what was out there that I could afford and that sounded good.
Based on your recommendations/reviews, I ended up getting a whole 5.1 system from Emotiva at one of their shows for a great price (what a great bunch of folks they are).
Then, again due to Stereophile praise, I bought an Oppo 105D. I already had experience with Oppo, so I know they're a good company.
My God, my system sounds SO good now. I hear details that I never noticed before on recordings that I've heard a thousand times. My musician friends are stunned when they hear their stuff through my system. My wife noticed the upgrade immediately, and she was in the kitchen at the time.
My Oppo player is also my DAC - I connected a 1TB portable USB drive to it to listen to 24-bit downloads from HDTracks. I also listen to 24-bit mixes from my studio - it's quicker than burning a 16-bit reference CD.
Unbelievable. At this point, if I had to choose between my system and my computer, well, the computer would have to go. At least my system will never stress me out.
Anyway, thanks, Stereophile, for opening my ears a tad wider. Not only do I enjoy listening even more, but I'm doing a much better job of mixing and mastering in the studio.
What a great magazine.
