Hey hey!
I was thinking about John Marks' article about recordings that have become part of the fabric of American life, and I was thinking back to when movie soundtracks made that transition from either a rehash of a musical or an hour of atmospherics into the modern form of music compilation that they seem to be now.
First, I thought it was the soundtrack to FM, but Saturday Night Fever preceeded it by a year.
No questioning the epic (unfortunate) impact that disc had on the American music scene, including a significant over-all social/style influence; but Mr. Marks requested we list discs that we actually enjoy listening to - which takes Saturday Night Fever right off my list.
So, my fallback is still FM.
It had two good Linda Ronstadt cuts, "Tumblin' Dice" and "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me."
The Joe Walsh cut is good, as is Steely Dan's contribution.
Plus, this was maybe the first movie I can recall where the soundtrack was actually the vehicle that carried the movie. 
Anyhow, anyone else have some favorite soundtracks that they keep around based purely on musical enjoyment?
I'll add the soundtrack to Something Wild as my favorite all around soundtrack, popular style music, with Zero Effect not far behind.
