Alma Music & Audio with Technics, Innuos, Accuphase, Amphion, Hana, Kubula-Sosna, GigaWatt
Bill Voss of Technics was tardy to his Alma/Technics room at Capital Audiofest 2024, so Stereophile managing editor Mark Henninger and I sidled in, invited show attendees, and spun some discs. By the time Bill arrived we had a small party going.
American Sound of Canada
Angie Lisi of American Sound of Canada always presents desirable components—CAF2024 was no exception. This year, Lisi launched the North American debut of German-made Perpetuum Ebner turntables, the new Phasemation SA1500 integrated amp, new Avantgarde Colibri Series speakers and subwoofer, new Avantgarde Zero Itron speakers, and her exclusive line of Italian Synthesis Art in Music tube amplification.
Audio Note (UK)
Adrian Ford-Crush manned the Audio Note (UK) room solo at CAF, though whispers circulated about the brand’s major domo Peter Qvortrup lurking in the crowd. Surprisingly, the usual Audio Note techno and classical blasts were replaced by soothing folk and jazz, a balm for weary show-goers.
Audio Thesis: T+A Elektroakustik, Turnbull Audio, Rosso Fiorentino, Silent Angel
Derek Skipworth of Arlington, Texas’s Audio Thesis was on hand to showcase several components at CAF2024.
Bending Wave and Tone Imports: Göbel, Wadax, Riviera Audio Labs, Shunyata
Bending Wave’s Elliot Goldman and Tone Imports’ Jonathan Halpern brought a change of pace to the Jackson Suite, with not one or two but eight US debuts for the rowdy Capital Audiofest (CAF) crowd.
Blink High End: Børresen C1 and Aavik U-588
One of my first stops at Capital Audiofest 2024 was the Blink High End room, which featured the debut of the Børresen C1 stand-mount speaker ($16,500) as well as the Aavik U-588 all-in-one integrated amplifier ($35,000). My first impression upon walking into the room was, "Where's all the gear?"
Border Patrol, Living Voice, Triode Wire Labs
Gary Dewes and Pete Grzybowski, the minds behind Border Patrol Audio and Triode Wire Labs, respectively, conjured a sonic space that wasn't merely heard, but felt. A room where sound didn't just exist, but seized the listener, demanding attention.
Capital Audiofest 2024, Rockville, Maryland
So there I was, in the parking lot of the Rockville Hilton, cigar smoke curling into the crisp autumn air, grilling Gary Gill about his brainchild, Capital Audio Fest (CAF). This East Coast audio extravaganza has grown into a monster, bursting at the seams of its Rockville venue.
Chesky Audio
The buzz was palpable weeks before I hit the show. David Chesky’s son, Lucca, had designed a pair of small bookshelf speakers—the LC1—while still in high school and developed the speakers while interning at Princeton University with Professor Edgar Choueiri, the brains behind Bacch SP.
Command Performance AV: J.Sikora, Doshi, Audiovector, REL, Gryphon, Marten, SOTA, Transparent, Solid Tech
The high-end audio world, with its shiny boxes and astronomical price tags, often gets a bad rap. People dismiss it as a playground for the wealthy, a place where form trumps function. But Jeff Fox, the mastermind behind Command Performance AV, isn’t buying it. He’s here to prove that high-end audio isn’t just about showing off; it’s about experiencing the blood, guts, and beauty of music. If the prices start to rise, at least you were warned.
