Audiophiles interested in experimenting with upconverting the digital data on their CDs to higher resolutions will find a recent announcement from the Netherlands of interest. Dutch company <A HREF="http://www.eximius.nl">Eximius</A> revealed last week a new product tagged "DVD+Audio Creator" for converting CDs to either upsampled PCM or compressed MP2 files.
As <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/011904roundup/index.html">promised</A> earlier in January, <A HREF="http://www.wmg.com">Warner Music Group</A> has announced a major restructuring that it hopes will put it in better shape to compete in the "challenging business environment of today's music industry." The move comes after the recent closing of WMG's $2.6 billion acquisition by Edgar Bronfman, Jr. and a group of investors.
Four short years ago, rock band Metallica angered part of its fan base by <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/10746/index.html">going after</A> downloaders who used the online file-trading service Napster. At that time, the band provided Napster with the screen names of 335,000 users reputed to be pirating Metallica's music, and demanded they be removed from the service. The group was also the <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/10725/">first to sue</A> the fledgling company.
A <A HREF="http://cgi.stereophile.com/cgi-bin/showvote.cgi?346">recent online poll</A> indicates that a majority of <I>Stereophile</I>'s online readers still don't like the idea of using computers when it comes to enjoying music. If a new report accurately predicts the future, they might as well get used to the rest of the world's booting up their tunes.
What ails the music business? <I>Stereophile</I> reader Jim Steel, in an <A HREF="http://cgi.stereophile.com/cgi-bin/showvote.cgi?337">online poll</A> last year, opined, "Most of today's pop and metal is lifeless, heartless, and crude. Over-produced, synthetic, and the core product (songs) are mind-numbingly dull and without imagination."
Two new companies have formed in recent weeks to bring audiophile cable and connector products to market.
Back in January of 2002, we <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/11252/index.html">reported</A> that loudspeaker manufacturer <A HREF="http://www.nhthifi.com">NHT</A> and <A HREF="http://www.deqx.com/">DEQX</A> (then known as ClarityEQ) had begun to co-develop a new line of active loudspeakers using DEQX's custom digital <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/10969/index.html">room correction technology</A>. It's two years later, and NHT says it is finally ready to unveil the first speaker system incorporating digital signal processing (DSP) developed during the alliance.
Now is clearly crunch time for satellite radio. In the last year alone, over one million new subscribers have been added to front-runner <A HREF="http://www.xmradio.com">XM Satellite Radio</A>'s service, bringing its total to approximately 1.4 million. The company projects that it will reach a total of 2.4 million subscribers by the end of 2004, thus ensuring its survival.
<A HREF="http://www.lehmannaudio.de">Lehmann audio</A> has carved out a small niche for itself in the analog market with the Black Cube phono preamp (first noted by Michael Fremer in the October 1998 issue of <I>Stereophile</I>). The company now hopes to reach a wider audience in the US and Canada for the Black Cube and the rest of its products with a new distribution arrangement between itself and <A HREF="http://www.lehmannaudio.de/hudsonaudioimports/">Hudson Audio Imports</A>.
<A HREF="http://www.sunncomm.com">SunnComm</A> and others have been trying for years to find ways to prevent consumers from copying music discs. While their success in preventing digital copies <A HREF="http://www.stereophile.com/news/11754/index.html">has been mixed</A>, lurking in the background was a problem many felt could never be solved.
